The drift eliminator is a key component in cooling towers. Its function is to retain and remove water droplets carried by the airflow, preventing water loss and improving system efficiency.
Why an efficient fridt eliminator is important
A drop separator or drift eliminator is considered highly efficient when it has a drift ratio <0.002% of the recirculating flow, or as we consider when certifying the system. Maintaining this level of efficiency not only optimizes water consumption but also is a legal requirement established by current regulations.
Requirements to ensure efficiency
For the system to meet that ratio of <0.002%, it is essential that:
- The separator is correctly installed, that is, it covers the entire surface
- Air velocity is maintained between 2.5 m/s and 3.5 m/s
Air plays a very important role in this whole process. If the velocity exceeds that range, the established ratio would not be met, which would cause the release of microdroplets at the top of the tower. That’s why all installations have a range of velocities that must be respected to ensure effective operation. It’s as simple as keeping it within the certified range to comply with what the legislation dictates.
Benefits of drop separators
A correctly integrated and maintained separator offers advantages that help optimize the cooling system:
- Minimize the risk of Legionella transmission
- Reduce water loss due to drift
- Increase protection of the cooling tower
- Prevent issues related to the dispersion of treated water
- Comply with current regulations regarding aerosol emissions
What the regulations say
The Royal Decree 487/2022, of 21 June refers to the prevention and control of legionellosis, establishing certain sanitary requirements to ensure hygienic conditions. This regulation introduces the obligation to certify that the system does not produce a loss greater than 0.002% of the total circulating flow. It also mentions several cooling tower components that must be inspected:
- Drop separators
- Fill media
- Distribution system
- Water condensers
The efficiency certificate
If the equipment meets all minimum requirements during inspection, it will receive a certificate that endorses its high efficiency. However, the optimal operation of the system will always depend on its correct installation and maintaining the appropriate air velocity range.
