Torraval has carried out a project in which 11 cooling towers were installed for Atlantic Copper, a metal-producing company with a large metallurgical complex in Huelva. Given that the complex has different production areas, such as smelting, refining, sulfuric acid plants, and thermal power plants—whose processes operate at high temperatures—these cooling systems were implemented.
Cooling project for the metallurgical industry
The client
Atlantic Copper is a Spanish company, considered a leader in Europe, with its official headquarters in Huelva and corporate offices in Madrid. It is dedicated to processing metallic raw materials, including copper, gold, silver, palladium, platinum, and nickel, as well as producing sulfuric acid and iron silicate.
The need
With a 60-hectare metallurgical complex, it was necessary to install cooling equipment capable of ensuring greater energy and water efficiency and, above all, meeting safety criteria within the production environment.
The challenge
The process was highly demanding, as several challenges arose during execution, including:
- Coordination of the project with eight additional contractors on site.
- Challenging weather conditions, such as strong winds and high temperatures.
- Initial limitations in installation space.
- Rescheduling and reorganization to meet project deadlines and standards.
The cooling solution
Holding daily on-site meetings each morning with the managers of all contractors was key to the project’s success. The installation of 11 towers was required, all adapted to the site conditions: 4 CTFP 2430 units arranged in line, facing another 7 CTFP 2436 towers. In addition, 2 field-erected towers were installed, each with 2 cells measuring 6 m x 6 m, maintaining quality and safety standards at every stage through prior planning.
