How to correctly position a cooling tower to maximize its performance

The proper placement of a cooling tower is a key factor to ensure its efficiency, extend its lifespan, and prevent performance issues. At Torraval Cooling, we know that correct installation not only improves the system’s operability but also prevents problems related to air recirculation, obstructions, or difficult maintenance.

Below are the main recommendations for choosing the best location for a cooling tower:

1. Outdoor location, well-ventilated, and with sufficient space

Whenever possible, install the tower outdoors in a well-ventilated area. It is essential to maintain a minimum distance from walls or other buildings, at least equal to the width of the air intake of the tower. This ensures optimal ambient air intake.

2. Avoid obstacles that hinder airflow

There should be no roof, shielding, duct, or object obstructing the free entry or exit of air. Poor airflow directly affects the thermal performance of the tower. It is also important to consider the prevailing winds and avoid areas where swirls or air recirculation might occur at the air inlets.

3. Install the tower away from populated or actively ventilated areas

To minimize nuisance and health risks, it is advisable to place the tower away from areas frequently occupied by people, such as entrances, open windows, or ventilation grilles. This helps reduce aerosol dispersion and noise, as well as comply with environmental and industrial hygiene regulations.

4. Avoid installing the tower under covers or roofs

Installing the tower under enclosed or semi-enclosed structures hinders the proper expulsion of hot and humid air, creating recirculation effects that negatively impact thermal performance. Moisture-saturated air does not cool effectively.

5. Keep the tower away from trees or other sources of debris

Avoid installing the tower near trees, especially in autumn. Fallen leaves can be sucked in by the fans and enter the hydraulic circuit, causing pump failures, blockages, or flow reductions, as well as increasing maintenance requirements.

6. Be cautious in courtyards or confined spaces

For installations located in courtyards or narrow areas, it is essential to study the tower’s orientation and ensure there is enough free space around it. This not only ensures good airflow but also access for maintenance, pipe connections, and periodic inspections.

A poorly positioned cooling tower can significantly reduce its efficiency, increase operational costs, and require more intensive maintenance. At Torraval, we always recommend conducting a prior site analysis to ensure optimal thermal performance, minimize risks, and extend the system’s service life.
